Well builder and brewer from Lublinitz, he lived in Sohrau at the time of his children's births, and kept an inn in Hindenburg. At the time of his son's 1900 marriage he lived in Zabrze. At his marriage to Amalie Gruenfeld in 1904 and his sons Georg's and Richard's marriages (1907 and 1911) he was living in Berlin.

His second wife, Amalie Gruenfeld, was previously married and widowed.
