Well builder and brewer from Lublinitz, he lived in Sohrau at the time of his children's births, and kept an inn in Hindenburg. At the time of his marriage to Amalie Gruenfeld in 1904 and of his sons Georg's and Richard's marriages (1907 and 1911) he was living in Berlin.

His second wife, Amalie Gruenfeld, was previously married and widowed.
