Loebel (Jehuda, Lieb) Gassmann
| Notes Businessman, trader, dealer. A cow theft was perpetrated at Rudzinietz and the entire vault, which contained many draperies, was cleared out from the merchant Löbel Gaßmann in Langendorf on the night of April 19-20 after a violent break-in during his absence. Der Oberschlesische Wanderer, Jg. 6, Nro. 19, 7 May 1833, page 90 Good sackcloth, 8/4 wide and 43 lbs. in weight, excellent for sacks of wool and grain, as well as all kinds of iron nails, of every type, are available at factory prices from L. Gaßmann in Langendorf. Der Oberschlesische Wanderer, Jg. 12, Nro. 20, 18 May 1839, page 103 An 1833 report of a break-in at his premises suggests his stock-in-trade was draperies. In 1839 he advertised 43 pounds-weight of sackcloth. More than twenty years after his death, his business was taken over by Joseph Siedel. The death notice gives his age as 74 years, meaning he was born in 1786-87; however, Friedrich Nothmann gives his dates as 1778-1861). A gravestone in Langendorf cemetery bears his name as an acrostic, and the Lions of Judah associated with the name Loeb. (Despite two visits to the cemetery, I missed the acrostic, and I'm grateful to Pimke for publishing a photo of the gravestone on Wikimedia.) My 4 x great grandfather.
