A carrier aged around 30 years in the 1841 census, so born about 1810. Matthew is absent in the 1851 census for 4 Green Bank, which shows Ann as the head of the household but married rather than widowed; however, Matthew's death certificate shows that he died at the same address in 1849. The 1861 census shows Ann as widowed and living with her daughter Anna (Hannah) and two children, William and Frederick, whose ages indicate that they were conceived since Matthew's death. Although these children are described as sons in relation to the head of their family, Frederick's birth certificate shows that he is in fact Hannah's son, and that he is probably illegitimate. The same is true for Frederick's younger brother, George, and so is almost certainly true for William.
