Simon's death was caused by an aeroplane crash (zwar infolge Absturz Flugzeug); the death certificate does not say whether he was in the aeroplane or struck by it. Simon is described as a Lieutenant in the Reserves, and his death was reported by the commander of the flying reserves. The death notice posted by his family gives similar information, describing Simon as a reservist flight lieutenant and holder of the Iron Cross.
