Alfred and Paula emigrated to France in January 1937. Alfred was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp in December 1938.

After the war Alfred and Paula lived in France. In 1953 they sailed from Durban, South Africa to London, giving an address in Paris and declaring themselves to be French nationals.
